Several professional societies offer support to their members for conference attendance.
Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) membership is inexpensive for early-career researchers.
The RSC offers travel grants for PhD students and early-career researchers; these grants cover only travel, not subsistence or accommodation expenses. Applications should be received at least three months before the start of the conference (i.e. by the end of January 2017).
The RSC also offers a limited number of non-competitive bursaries for UK PhD students and early-career researchers, which are assigned on a first-come-first-served basis.
Institute of Physics (IoP) membership is inexpensive for early-career researchers.
The Early Career Researcher Fund provides financial support to early-career researchers in industry or academia who are members of the IoP and of an appropriate Institute special interest group. The application deadline is 1 December 2016.
The Research Student Conference Fund is available to PhD students who are members of the IoP and of an appropriate Institute special interest group. The application deadline is 1 December 2016.
The CR Barber Trust Fund supports attendance for early-career researchers at a conference overseas (i.e. for RSC EPR 2017, it is not applicable to UK residents). It has a rolling deadline; applications must be received at least one month before the start of the conference.
European Physical Society (EPS) membership information is available here.
We are pleased to announce that the 2017 RSC ESR group meeting has been selected as an EPS sponsored conference. The EPS makes a limited number of Individual Member Travel Grants available to EPS Individual Members to attend Europhysics and Sponsored Conferences. Please visit the EPS website to download more information and apply for the grant. Eligibility criteria include having an accepted oral or poster contribution to the conference.
The Biochemical society offers General Travel Grants. Anyone who has been a member of the Biochemical Society for at least 12 months is eligible to apply, whatever their stage of career. Applications must be received by either the 1st January deadline or the 1st March deadline (but applying as early as possible is encouraged).
